On November 28, 2024, representatives of Turkmenistan took part in the 28th special session of the General Conference of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) via videoconference.

The Turkmen side, which chairs the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, was invited to the event as an observer.

During the session, the Secretary General of OPANAL spoke, reports of the Council of this agency, as well as speeches by representatives of the participating countries were heard.

The key areas of OPANAL's activities aimed at maintaining the nuclear-free status of Latin America, expanding the regulatory framework for international cooperation in this area, promoting international partnership in the field of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, taking into account the environmental component, were announced.

In particular, the draft Memorandum of Understanding between the Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia and the OPANAL Agency was considered.

A representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan spoke at the session. The results of cooperation with regional nuclear-weapon-free zones and the work of Central Asian countries to unite international efforts were noted.

It is important to emphasize that Turkmenistan, being the initiator of the UN General Assembly resolutions adopted in 2022 and 2024 on the Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation in Central Asia, contributed to the development of strong mechanisms for regular five-party political contacts at the highest state level.
