On 13 October 2026, the opening of the international training seminar of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” programme took place in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Its theme is “Expanding opportunities for documentary diversity”.

The main goal of the seminar is to strengthen international cooperation and to build the human and technical capacity of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. This will help them preserve their valuable documentary heritage and nominate it to the international register of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” programme.

The event was organized by the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI), together with the national commissions for UNESCO of Korea and Indonesia and the Korea Heritage Service.

The opening was attended by the deputy minister of culture of Indonesia, Giring Ganesha, and the chair of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” Committee for the Asia-Pacific region, Kwibae Kim.

This seminar is meant to be the largest in the whole history of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” programme. It brings together representatives from Asia-Pacific countries, including Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Palau, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tuvalu. Leading international experts in documentary heritage preservation have arrived in Jakarta to take part.

The agenda includes practical tasks such as training in nomination methods, assessing the physical condition of collections, risk management, preparing materials for long-term digital preservation, and others.

At this international “Memory of the World” seminar, Turkmenistan is represented by Chinar Rustemova, executive secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO Affairs, and Maksat Meredov, research fellow at the Institute of Language, Literature and National Manuscripts of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
