MEETING AT THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS WITH THE UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR IN TURKMENISTAN

On September 9, 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R. Meredov, had a meeting with the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Ms. Elena Panova, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

During the meeting, the main emphasis was placed on the interaction of the parties in implementing the initiatives and proposals declared by Turkmenistan in Priority Positions at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In particular, they highlighted the wide opportunities available for joint work to unleash the potential of neutrality of Turkmenistan in the context of multilateral efforts to maintain peace, security and the development of international partnership. In this regard, readiness was expressed for cooperation in the preparation of the International Conference on Peace, Security and Development in December 2020, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the international recognition of Turkmenistan as a permanent neutral state.

In addition, the timeliness of the initiative to adopt the UN General Assembly resolution on declaring 2021 as the Year of International Peace and Confidence was emphasized.

The UN Resident Coordinator drew attention to the practical importance of the proposals of Turkmenistan on the need to organize the UN Conference on Financing for Development and the International Conference of Ministers of the Landlocked Developing countries in the framework of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the global level.

In addition, the focus was on continuing to work together to expand international cooperation on energy security and sustainable transport.

Touching upon environmental issues, the parties discussed a number of practical steps towards the creation of a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea basin countries and emphasized the great potential of the initiative to establish a new UN Caspian Environmental Program.

It was emphasized that during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan, together with other member countries of the Organization, will continue to take concrete practical steps aimed at strengthening the leading and coordinating role of the UN in international affairs.
